Is Jesus the Son of God also God the Son?

Is it correct to worship Yeshua Ha-Mashiach, a.k.a. Jesus Christ?

A few days ago a reader posed this question to me:

So Adam is a son of God, I am a son of God, you are a son of God, Jesus is a son of God. If this is the case – I am a human, you are a human, Adam is a human and so Jesus is also a human. I do not worship Adam, who is the son of God. I do not worship myself, the son of God. I do not worship you, the son of God.

Can you give me a single reason when all of us are sons of God and we do not worship anyone for being the sons of God, why Jesus alone should be worshipped as a son of God?

Please give me reasonable evidence from the bible if it says to worship Jesus, the Christ.

I would start with understanding the importance of the term “the Christ” – it means “anointed one”, but anointed for what?  I addressed this at length in a previous post here.   In short, Jesus is anointed to sit eternally on David’s throne per a prophecy in 2 Samuel 7:12-16 and Psalm 132:11.  He is called “Lord and Christ” by Peter in the first sermon of the church in Acts 2 – this is no less than a claim that Jesus is God, for it is Yahweh God who is our savior per the Old Testament book of Joel, verse 2:32, which Peter claims as being fulfilled by Jesus in Acts 2:21.

But if that is too much “in the weeds” for you, here are a few, rather plain scriptures (there are hundreds, at a minimum) from both Old Testament and New showing worship of Jesus as Son of God, co-equal in essence with the Father and Holy Spirit…

Jesus, Son of God, who will rule the nations, from the Old Testament—My comments are in brackets:

Psalm 2:4-12:

He who sits in the heavens [God the Father] laughs,
The Lord scoffs at them.
Then He will speak to them in His anger
And terrify them in His fury, saying,
“But as for Me [God the Father], I have installed My King [God the Son]
Upon Zion, My holy mountain.”

“I [the Son] will surely tell of the decree of the LORD:
He [the Father] said to Me, ‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance,
And the very ends of the earth as Your possession.
‘You [the Son] shall break them with a rod of iron,
You shall shatter them like earthenware.’”

Now therefore, O kings, show discernment;
Take warning, O judges of the earth.
Worship the LORD [this is the word YHWH, or “Yahweh”] with reverence
And rejoice with trembling.
Do homage [נשק nashaq, “kiss”] to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way,
For His [the Son’s] wrath may soon be kindled.
How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!

Read the entire chapter to get a picture of Yeshua coming into His Millennial Kingdom (see also Rev 20:4-6).

Dan 7:13-14:

“I kept looking in the night visions,
And behold, with the clouds of heaven
One like a Son of Man [Yeshua, in human form] was coming,
And He came up to the Ancient of Days [the Father]
And was presented before Him [the Father].
“And to Him [the Son] was given dominion,
Glory and a kingdom,
That all the peoples, nations and men of every language
Might serve [פלח pĕlach, “serve” or “worship”] Him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion
Which will not pass away;
And His kingdom is one
Which will not be destroyed.

This is also an amazing chapter, giving a picture of both Father God and God the Son as the Millennial Kingdom is being set up.  It also describes the destruction of the last days’ “Beast” empire.  I wonder what empire that would be?  I’ll give you one guess…

The chapter ends with this verse:

Then the sovereignty, the dominion and the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Highest One [in context, the Son of Man, Yeshua]; His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey [it is only proper to serve and obey God] Him.’

Worship of Jesus when He was on earth, in Israel:

Matt 8:2:  A leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”

John 9:38:  Jesus heard that they had put him out, and finding him, He said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” He answered, “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?” Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him, and He is the one who is talking with you.” And he said, “Lord, I believe.” And he worshiped Him.

It is axiomatic that you will be “put out” of the synagogue, mosque, Shinto temple, university faculty, your group of friends, almost everywhere, when you start to declare the truth of who Yeshua actual is.

Matt 28:9:  Jesus met them and greeted them. And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him.

Angels worship Yeshua:

Hebrews 1:5-9:

For to which of the angels did He ever say,

 And again,

And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says,

And of the angels He says,

But of the Son He says,

The capitalized words in the passage above to alert readers of old testament scriptures being quoted by the author of Hebrews.

Phil 2:5-11:

Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,  but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.  Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.  For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,  so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,  and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord [the term reserved for God in the Old Testament], to the glory of God the Father.

It is impossible to avoid seeing worship of Yeshua when reading the Bible.  How one responds to this reality is the real question—will we try to explain it away as either mistakes or misinterpretations?  Will we ignore it and go on with our lives?  The Bible says Jesus is the Son of God, worthy of worship—won’t you bow your knee to God and acknowledge His great salvation and love poured out for you?

  1. carol says:

I know that the belief that Jesus was God is a christian believe I Have a problem with Mary giving birth to God that is so insane.i think the bible says what it means Jesus is the son of God the firstborn of creation. now i have a first born as you might also a first born is not his father he can have the same characteristics as his father mirror him in all ways and not be his father I Simply do dot believe our great all powerful God came and was born of Mary.Mary was the mother of Jesus there fore is the mother of God,explain this to me.

  2. Kurt J. says:

You’re free to believe what you want to believe, but the writer’s of the bible were clear – Mary, as a virgin, gave birth to Yeshua (means “Yah”, short for “Yahweh”, saves) as prophesied in the old testament (Isa 7:14) and confirmed in the new testament (Mt 1:23-25, Luke 1:26-36)

That Jesus was not only God’s son but God THE Son is an essential doctrine of the Bible. Only God could save his people from their sins (Psm 106:21, Isa 43:3, Hosea 13:4).

  3. Willard says:

kurt – I think the you meant to Is 7:14 not 17

Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel

Carol I would add tat because God created man in his own image he created us both as male and female and there fore he could use Mary to bring salvation to this sinful world through him first creation.

Ge 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them

Mary is not really the mother of God per se – but she is the women and mother of Jesus that he used to bring Gods Son into the world through – to carry out his plan of salvation for us sinners.

You can look the NT through and you will never find anywhere that Jesus calls Mary his mother even though she carried him for 9 months and gave birth to Christ. His disiples refered to her as his mother because physicaly she was but Jesus refered to her simply as woman when from the cross his last act of love he gave her to his best friend John

Jn 19:25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
Jn 19:26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son,”
Jn 19:27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home

  4. Kurt J. says:

Thanks for catching that, Willard. I fixed it. Good points, but whether Jesus referred to Mary as “mother” in a scripture I think is beside the point, she certainly was his human mother and contributed her DNA to the equation, for several reasons:

    1. Not only did Jesus need to be God to save us, He needed to be man, in order to represent us and to fully obey the law of God.

    2. He needed to be descended of David per 2 Sam 7:12 – Mary is a descendant of David, as seen in Luke 3:23-38.

  5. Willard says:

I totally agree with you on that Kurt as well – he is the Son of David and the Son of man and the Son of God – I like the DNA connection you made and refered to – fits todays understanding of things

We had a sermon two weeks ago in out church exactly about that the DNA of Jesus – In our church we have people from over 50 countries East Indians, Arabs, Malaysian, Philipeinos, Africa, Holland, Germany, England, USA, SA, Brazil, etc etc.

We had over 25 nationalties dressed in their native dress and speak or read a verse from the Psalms in their native tongue and it was really effective. The sermon was given by a pastor from India and he explained the DNA of Jesuses geneology with the nations of the world. From Ruth being a gentile, to Rahab the prostitute etc.

I deleted the double post, one of the perks of having your own blog!!

That’s cool about your church. Amazing how the Spirit of God can unify us as we focus on Jesus.

Jesus is truly God and truly man, hallelujah!

  6. Willard says:

Gal 3:28 We are all one at the foot of the cross

  7. D.Davis says:

Jesus is the son of God.Jesus called his Father his God.He did not say he was his Father’s God.Jesus is the mighty God but he is not God the Father the almighty God.Jesus is the Father of all believers because of his sacrifice.Because of his sacrifice all that obey will receive eternal life.Jesus is our high Priest he appears before the almighty God, our heavenly Father on our behalf,Hebrews 24:9.Jesus said the Father is greater than him,John14:28.He also, said he could do nothing without the Father.God the father can not die.Jesus died and his father resurrected him.God the Father has always had immortality and no one has ever seen,1Timothy6:16. Jesus said the Father would give him life within himself,John 5:28.Why because Jesus was obedience to death.God the Father have given Jesus life within himself and have blessed him above all, Hebrews 1:5-13. Not one scripture teaches the Holy Spirit is a God.The holy spirit is called the spirit of God in the scriptures. The son is to sit on his father right hand.In the book of Revelation God the Father is on his throne,in the midst of the elders is Christ.Where is that God some call the Holy Spirit? The door of heaven is opened the father is present, his son is present, angels are present spiritual creatures are present, the elders are present, yet that third God called the Holy Spirit by some is not present. Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sit on the throne, and the Lamb, forever and ever Revelation 6:13.Praise to God and his son but no praise to that third God.The teaching of the trinity is a man made false doctrine which is rooted in paganism. Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear o Israel the Lord our God is ONE God.

  8. Willard says:

Jn 10:30 I and the Father are one

Jn 20:28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God

Jn 14:7 If you really knew me, you would knowmy Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
Jn 14:8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”
Jn 14:9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father

Jn 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jn 14:7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him

Jn 5:19 Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does

Jn 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever
Jn 14:17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

1Jn 5:7 For there are three a that testify:
1Jn 5:8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement

Ge 18:2 Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.
Ge 18:3 He said, “If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by

Jn 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name

Ge 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, PLURAL – LET US OUR IMAGE

    And there is much more

    • Kurt J. says:

      Amen, Willard.

The doctrine of the Trinity is indispensable and separates Christians from all others, and has from the very beginning; this is the basic and original dispute that Jews had with the Christians.

It is your prerogative to ignore the clear testimony of scripture, Genesis to Revelation, that God is a multi-person, uncreated being, but I see the Trinity everywhere in the Bible.

      Scripture also warns us that:

If we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed! Gal 1:8-9

I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book. Rev 22:18-19

Here are the verses just preceding those above, and my comments:

Jesus declares His uncreated, eternal God-hood:

12 Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.

Jesus declares our robes must be washed–are yours? What is a sufficient cleanser in which to wash our robes? Our good works? Better search the scriptures:

14 Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city. 15 Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the immoral persons and the murderers and the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying.

Jesus declares he is both the source and product of David; how can that be, without Him being God, and God come in the flesh?

16 “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”

The Spirit is volitional, with person-hood; who is He? Answer carefully, don’t just parrot what your group tells you is the truth:

17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost.
