Islam: How to Treat Women

January 30, 2014

burkaBlame them for their mistreatment: Hadith, Bukhari, 5096, “[Muhammad said] The worst sin and distraction from virtue that I have left for man is woman …”

Beat them: Qur’an Sura 38:44, ”And take in your hand a green branch and beat her with it, and do not break your oath …”

Ignore it when another man beats his wife: Hadith, Abu Dawud, 2142, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: A man will not be asked as to why he beat his wife …”

Treat them as mentally inferior to men: Hadith, Bukhari 6:301, “[Muhammad] said, ‘Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man? … This is the deficiency in her intelligence.’”

Use corporal punishment on them; men are superior to them: Qur’an Sura 4:34, “Men have authority over women because [Allah] has made the one superior to the other… Good women are obedient… As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them. Then if they obey you, take no further action against them …”

Imprison them in their own homes: Qur’an Sura 33:33a, “And abide quietly in your homes, and do not flaunt your charms [as women] as they used to flaunt them in the old days of pagan ignorance; and be constant in prayer, and render the purifying dues, and pay heed unto God and His Apostle …”

Understand that most of them end up in Hell: Hadith, Bukhari 5196, “[Muhammad said] When I stood on the door of hell, I saw most of its inhabitants were women …”

Rape them when they are captured: Qur’an Sura 33:50a, “O Prophet! Lo! We have made lawful unto thee … those [women] whom Allah hath given thee as spoils of war …”

Rape your wife whenever you like: Qur’an Sura 2:223, “Your wives are your fields, so go into your fields whichever way you like… Be mindful of [Allah]: remember that you will meet Him …”

“Marry” more than one and treat them as possessions: Qur’an Sura 4:3,  “Marry such women as seem good to you, two and three and four; but if you fear that you will not do justice (between them), then (marry) only one or what your right hands possess…”

Give them a lesser inheritance than their brothers: Qur’an Sura 4:11, “Allah instructs you concerning your children: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females. But if there are [only] daughters, two or more, for them is two thirds of one’s estate. And if there is only one, for her is half…”

Dump them as a wife and replace them at will: Qur’an Sura 4:20, “But if you want to replace one wife with another and you have given one of them a great amount [in gifts], do not take [back] from it anything. Would you take it in injustice and manifest sin?”

The Qur’an in its own words – Surah 9, At-Tawbah (The Repentance)

June 3, 2012

Little surprise, right away in Qur’an chapter 9 we encounter more fighting and killing:

9:5:   When the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush.

9:14:   Fight them, and Allah will punish them by your hands.

9:73:   O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.

9:123:   O you who have believed, fight those adjacent to you of the disbelievers and let them find in you harshness.

Here’s an example of the inverse of  ‘golden rule’ taught by Jesus (“do unto others as you would have them do unto you”), found in many places throughout the Qur’an:

9:7:   So as long as they are upright toward you, be upright toward them.

If you’re not “striving” with everyone who is a non-Muslim, Allah is not happy:

9:16:   Or even did you reckon that you would be left in peace, and Allah does not know as yet the ones of you who have striven and have not taken to themselves, apart from Allah and His Messenger and the believers, any confidant?

Fight unbelievers and make them pay ransom taxes to remain alive as second class citizens:

9:29:  Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day… fight until they give the jizyah (tax on non-Muslims) willingly while they are humbled.

A cruel irony given what happened on Sept 11, 2001 (9-11) when 19 hijackers killed themselves and thousands of others in exchange for Paradise, it is Surah (Chapter) 9 Verse 111 that states Allah will reward with Paradise the Muslims who fight and die in his cause:

9:111  Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah , so they kill and are killed. [It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur’an. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah ? So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted. And it is that which is the great attainment.

The Qur’an in its own words – Surah 8, Al-‘Anfāl (The Spoils of War)

April 25, 2012

Chapter 8 is full of violence – Allah not only condones but commands Muslims to fight the unbelievers in his cause, and allows them to keep captives, or slaves, and other booty and spoils of war. In fact, the subtitle for this chapter is very accurate: “The Spoils of War”.  Nominal Muslims who are not familiar with the plain teachings of their religion might be shocked if they actually read their “holy” book, while radical or devoted Muslims already know what it contains and are fully engaged in carrying out its commands. And as allowed by the Qur’an, they commit taqiyya, or lying, to deceive and direct the world’s attention from the truth.

Spoils of war are not wrong, but they are at Allah’s and Mohammad’s disposal:

8:1: They ask thee concerning (things taken as) spoils of war. Say: “such spoils are at the disposal of Allah and the Messenger”

Allah commands beheadings and cutting off of fingertips to cast terror into disbeliever’s hearts; Allah is severe in penalty:

8:12-13: I (Allah) will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved, so strike them upon the necks and strike from them every fingertip.” That is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger – indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.

Instructions for Muslims in battle against disbelievers:

8:15: O ye who believe! When ye meet those who disbelieve in battle, turn not your backs to them.

But if Muslims turn their back in battle, Allah will throw them in Hell:

8:16:  Whoso on that day turns his back to them, unless maneuvring for battle or intent to join a company, he truly has incurred wrath from Allah, and his habitation will be Hell.

Muslims are not to stop fighting until Islam is completely dominant:

8:39: And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is all for Allah.

Its OK to take war booty, just make sure you give 1/5 of it to Allah and Mohammad, etc:

8:40: And know that anything you obtain of war booty – then indeed, for Allah is one fifth of it and for the Messenger and for his near relatives and the orphans, the needy, and the stranded traveler.

Muslims are exhorted to fight:

8:65: O Prophet! Exhort the believers to fight.

Muslim prophets can keep captives of war after they have massacred Allah’s enemies:

8:67: It is not for a prophet to have captives of war until he inflicts a massacre upon Allah ‘s enemies in the land.

War booty won when fighting for Allah should be consumed and enjoyed as lawful and good:

8:69: So consume what you have taken of war booty as being lawful and good, and fear Allah.

Muslims are to consider converts as close, but relatives are more entitled to inheritance in the ways of Allah, i.e., ‘love’ may be biased:

8:75: And those who believed and emigrated and fought with you – they are of you. But those of blood relationship are more entitled to inheritance in the decree of Allah.

The Qur’an in its own words – Surah 7, Al-‘A`rāf (The Heights)

March 28, 2012

Continuing on in this series comparing the Qur’an with scripture, I am particularly looking for the distinguishing differences – they are not hard to find…

The standard of Allah is low; good deeds must simply outweigh the bad:

Qur’an 7:8:  And the weighing of deeds that Day will be the truth. So those whose scales are heavy – it is they who will be the successful. And those whose scales are light – they are the ones who will lose themselves for what injustice they were doing toward Our verses.

The standard of Yahweh is perfection:

Romans 3:10-18, 23:

THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE;
11 THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS,
THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD;
12 ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS;
THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD,
THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.
13 “THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE,
WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING,”
“THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS”;
14 “WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS”;
15 “THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD,
16 DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS,
17 AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN.”
18 “THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES”…

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

The Qur’an is derivative of the Bible, and turns a parable from the Bible into literality:

Qur’an 7:50:  And the inmates of the fire shall call out to the dwellers of the garden, saying: Pour on us some water or of that which Allah has given you. They shall say: Surely Allah has prohibited them both to the unbelievers.

Luke 16:22-26:  22And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

23And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

25But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

26And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

The Qur’an jumps from one Biblical reference to the next, with no explanation or context, often getting the facts confused:

Qur’an 7:106-110:  Pharaoh said, “If you have come with a sign, then bring it forth, if you should be of the truthful.” So Moses threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent, manifest.  And he drew out his hand; thereupon it was white [with radiance] for the observers.  Said the eminent among the people of Pharaoh, “Indeed, this is a learned magician – He intends to turn you out of your land. What counsel do you then give?”

It was Aaron, not Moses, whose staff became a serpent:

Exodus 7:10:  Aaron threw his staff down before Pharaoh and his servants, and it became a serpent

There is nothing is the Biblical account about a radiant, white hand, but God did declare this:

Exodus 7:5:  The Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch out My hand on Egypt and bring out the sons of Israel from their midst.”

Moses didn’t intend to evict Pharaoh from the land, but was asking that Israel be permitted to leave:

Exodus 8:1:  Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD, “Let My people go”

Surah 7 contains numerous other deviations from the Exodus account, for instance stating that Pharaoh’s magicians fell down to worship Allah when the staff became a serpent (they actually produced the same miracle, see Exodus 7:11) and that Pharaoh threatened to crucify the magicians as a result—he did not, and furthermore, crucifixion was not practiced at the time.

If you are interested in seeing what really happened between Moses, Aaron and Pharaoh, I encourage you to read the book of Exodus, the 2nd book of the Bible.

The Qur’an in its own words – Surah 6 Al-‘An`ām (The Cattle)

March 23, 2012

This post concerns only verses in Surah (Chapter) 6, a rather tedious and repetitive slog of 165 verses.  As I’ve been reading my way through the Qur’an and making comments on each chapter, I’ve noticed a constant drumbeat against Christianity and Judaism; it returns to this theme multiple times in each chapter.  A picture is being painted of a very insecure Allah, preoccupied with railing against biblical doctrines and peoples.  The book is essentially one long polemic against Jews and Christians.

Here are some examples of energy expended against a non-Unitarian God, specifically Yahweh as revealed in the Bible:

6:1:  Those who reject Faith hold others as equal, with their Guardian-Lord.

6:14:  Be not of the company of those who join gods with Allah.

6:19:  Do you testify that with Allah there are other deities? …Say, “Indeed, He is but one God”

6:22:  One day shall We gather them all together:  We shall say to those who associated others with Allah: “Where are the partners whom you invented and talked about?

6:64:  Say, “It is Allah who saves you from it and from every distress; then you still associate others with Him.”

6:101:  He is Originator of the heavens and the earth. How could He have a son when He does not have a companion and He created all things?

6:163:  No partner has He…

The Bible promises that “God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.  He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.  1 John 5:11,12

Another topic that finds no comparison in biblical doctrines – Allah purposefully leading people astray:

6:39:  Whom Allah pleases He causes to err and whom He pleases He puts on the right way.

6:110:  And We will turn their hearts and their sights, even as they did not believe in it the first time, and We will leave them in their transgression, blindly wandering on.

6:125:  Whomever Allah wills to guide, He expands his breast to Islam; and whomever He wills to lead into error, He makes his breast straitened, restricted, as if he were laboriously climbing up in the heaven.

Yeshua said Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.”  Matthew 11:28,29

The Qur’an in its own words – Surah 5 Al-Mā’idah (The Table Spread)

March 18, 2012

As I make my way through the Qur’an I’m picking out verses that reveal the differences between Islamic beliefs and the Hebrew/ Christian scriptures.  Here are some examples from my latest readings:

On Messengers of God Following the New Testament:

Qur’an 5:15:  O people of the Book! There hath come to you our Messenger, revealing to you much that ye used to hide in the Book

Qur’an 5:19:   Our Messenger has already come to you making things evident to you, upon an interval between the Messengers

Bible, Gal 1:9:  If any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!

On Reconciliation of the Enemies of God:

Qur’an 5:33:  Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth to cause corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land.

Bible, 1 Pet 2:24:  He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.

On Recompense for Crime:

Qur’an 5:38:  As to the thief, Male or female, cut off his or her hands: a punishment by way of example, from Allah, for their crime

Qur’an 5:45:  And We prescribed to them in it that life is for life, and eye for eye, and nose for nose, and ear for ear, and tooth for tooth

Bible, Matt 5:38-39:  You have heard that it was said, ‘AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

On Predestination and God’s Will:

Qur’an 5:41:  And whomever Allah subjects to temptation, then you will never possess for him anything against Allah. Those are they whose hearts Allah is not willing to purify; for them is disgrace in the present life, and in the Hereafter they will have a tremendous torment.

Bible, Acts 2:21:  AND IT SHALL BE THAT EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.

On the Treatment of Jews and Christians:

Qur’an 5:51:  O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends

Qur’an 5:82:  You will surely find the most intense of the people in animosity toward the believers to be the Jews and those who associate others with Allah

Bible, Luke 6:35:  But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.

On Reaching the Lost:

Qur’an 5:68:  That which has been revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. So do not grieve over the disbelieving people.

Bible, Romans 9:2.3:  I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my brethren

On the Trinity:

Qur’an 5:73:  They do blaspheme who say: Allah is one of three in a Trinity: for there is no god except One Allah.

Bible, 1 John 2:23, 5:6:  Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also… It is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.

On the Deity of Christ:

Qur’an  5:75:  Christ the son of Mary was no more than a messenger; many were the messengers that passed away before him.

John 1:1, 2, 14:  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God… And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

There are a great deal of verses in the Qur’an that are nothing other than a polemic against Yahweh, the God revealed in the Bible, and His son Yeshua – His character is distorted, His words are twisted, His ways are muddied.   The very purpose of the Qur’an seems to be to question God, reminding one of the serpent in the garden of Eden who asked Eve “Indeed, has God said… ?”

The Qur’an in its own words – Surah 4:101-176: Jesus did not die; God does not have a son

November 29, 2011

As I make my way through the Qur’an I’m picking out verses that reveal the differences between Islamic beliefs and the Hebrew/ Christian scriptures.  Here are some examples from my latest readings:

Shortening your prayer/curtailing your worship of Allah is OK where it is “politically” expedient due to “disbelievers”:

And when ye go forth in the land, it is no sin for you to curtail (your) worship if ye fear that those who disbelieve may attack you. In truth the disbelievers are an open enemy to you.   4:101

When you commit sin, you are committing it only against yourself (not Allah):

Whoso committeth sin committeth it only against himself. Allah is ever Knower, Wise. 4:111

Allah leads people astray and arouses sinful desires in people:

And I will mislead them, and I will arouse in them [sinful] desires… 4:119

Allah is accommodating of divorce, quite a contrast from YHWH, who “hates divorce”:

But if they separate [by divorce], Allah will enrich each [of them] from His abundance…. 4:130

Allah commands Muslims not to take unbelievers as friends:

O ye who believe! Take not for friends unbelievers… 4:144

Jesus was not crucified or killed per the Qur’an, despite the clear testimony of the Bible:

And [for] their saying, “Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah .” And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain.  4:157

Jesus will be against the people who believed in Him on the ‘Day of Resurrection’:

And there is none from the People of the Scripture but that he will surely believe in Jesus before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection he will be against them a witness.  4:159

God made some food off-limits for the Jews because of their wrongdoing:

For wrongdoing on the part of the Jews, We made unlawful for them [certain] good foods which had been lawful to them, and for their averting from the way of Allah many [people]  4:160

The Qur’an usurps the major figures of the Hebrew and Christian scriptures for Allah:

Lo! We inspire thee as We inspired Noah and the prophets after him, as We inspired Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, and Jesus and Job and Jonah and Aaron and Solomon, and as We imparted unto David the Psalms  4:163

The Qur’an militates against a Trinitarian God:

The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah, and His word which He conveyed unto Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and say not “Three” – Cease! (it is) better for you! – Allah is only One Allah. Far is it removed from His Transcendent Majesty that He should have a son.  4:171
