The Qur’an in its own words – Surah 9, At-Tawbah (The Repentance)

Little surprise, right away in Qur’an chapter 9 we encounter more fighting and killing:

9:5:   When the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush.

9:14:   Fight them, and Allah will punish them by your hands.

9:73:   O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.

9:123:   O you who have believed, fight those adjacent to you of the disbelievers and let them find in you harshness.

Here’s an example of the inverse of  ‘golden rule’ taught by Jesus (“do unto others as you would have them do unto you”), found in many places throughout the Qur’an:

9:7:   So as long as they are upright toward you, be upright toward them.

If you’re not “striving” with everyone who is a non-Muslim, Allah is not happy:

9:16:   Or even did you reckon that you would be left in peace, and Allah does not know as yet the ones of you who have striven and have not taken to themselves, apart from Allah and His Messenger and the believers, any confidant?

Fight unbelievers and make them pay ransom taxes to remain alive as second class citizens:

9:29:  Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day… fight until they give the jizyah (tax on non-Muslims) willingly while they are humbled.

A cruel irony given what happened on Sept 11, 2001 (9-11) when 19 hijackers killed themselves and thousands of others in exchange for Paradise, it is Surah (Chapter) 9 Verse 111 that states Allah will reward with Paradise the Muslims who fight and die in his cause:

9:111  Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah , so they kill and are killed. [It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur’an. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah ? So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted. And it is that which is the great attainment.
